History The Vine's history goes back to 1861 when the original license was granted for the existing site. The present day building dates back from 1895 and the bricks for the hotel were made on site from clay on the property. The Cellar Museum One might stand in this vast Cellar and wonder what might have been, why is it so large, bearing in mind that it would have been dug out with horses, ploughs, picks and shovels. Was it to store beer and wine - did Henry Parfitt, the original owner, make his prize winning wines in this cellar? There is a tunnel leading from the cellar - which as legend has it was the entry and escape route used by Ned Kelly when he had meetings in the cellar and enjoyed having a beer at the Vine. The Vine is considered to be a unique hotel and has long been a local landmark. It is our intention to preserve and not destroy its individual character. The future of the hotel lies in its past with all the legends and stories that have persisted over the years. The cellar is open 7 days a week for you to come & experience some of the Vine's and surround district history at no charge. A visit is a must on your sightseeing tours in and around Wangaratta. |
